We built our home almost seven years ago, and the whole thing was "contractor grade." [If you aren't familiar with the term, that's just fancy-speak for B-O-R-I-N-G]. About three years ago we decided to add a little personality to the kitchen, so the first thing to go was the plain-jane counter top. I've noticed that concrete counter tops are becoming increasingly popular these days, and with good reason. Here's why we chose them: granite was definately popular and gorgeous... but not in our budget, soapstone was what I really wanted... but not in our budget, Corian countertops are super durable and beautiful... but not in our budget [are you sensing a pattern here?!] and last but not least... laminate made the budget but that's what we already had.
However [and this is a big however], it was not an easy project. In fact, it was the hardest DIY project that we've ever done [ever, seriously... in the history of ever.]. Did that scare most of you off? Well, if you're still reading this then I'm assuming that you are you still interested. I have completed the tutorial post on How to Make Concrete Counter Tops, so check it out if you want to learn more! But first, I suggest reading the following pros & cons of having concrete counter tops:
Here's an HONEST list of what I do and don't like about them after three years of wear and tear:
1. I love the way they look [in general]. A very solid, high end feel.
2. I love the cost. Less than laminate. Yea, I know. [That's a big one.]
3. I love that they are easy to keep clean.
4. I love that I don't have to worry about stains or spills [but mine are dark which helps].5. I don't love that they can chip. I have several little chips in my countertop as I type this.
6. I love that I know how to fix the chips myself [bonus of a DIY project... you are your own handy man!].
7. I don't love that they can scratch. [I haven't tried to fix scratches yet, but I'll let you know how it works when I do.]
8. I don't love that they need to be resealled every-other year. [I haven't resealed mine yet... thus the chips and scratches.]
9. I didn't love that it was the hardest DIY project ever! But [much like childbirth], looking back it was totally worth it :)
That's all I can think of for now... I'll update this list if anything else comes to mind!

Thanks for this post...I have been thinking about concrete countertops and will be looking for your upcoming posts!
ReplyDeleteGreat! I'm working on the how-to now :)
DeleteThey are seriously some fine looking counter-tops. I'd have to do some work on convincing my hubby to take this project on but I love love love the look.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, we're really happy with them! It's a huge project, but definately worth it.
DeleteYou haven't scared me away yet. I'm interested to know whether you can set hot pots off the stove onto your counter, or does the sealer react to the heat? Love the look!
ReplyDeleteOh Good! [...just wait until you see the post with instructions, lol!] When I first sealed the countertops I avoided putting anything hot directly on them [mostly because I didn't know what it would do and didn't want to "chance it"]. However, now I occasionally do put hot items on them and they are fine. Is it because they need resealed, though? That I'm not sure of. Sorry- that's a pitiful answer, but the truth :) I need to reseal them soon, so I'll let you know how they do with a fresh coat!
DeleteYour counters turned out beautifully. What a project.
ReplyDeleteTraci
Thanks so much, Traci!
ReplyDeleteReally an interesting post! I've admired counters like that from the first time I heard of them. I would love to see a "how to". Our kitchen desperately needs some updating -- the 1977 wood grain laminate counters MUST GO.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jane! I'll be getting the "how to" up soon :) Choosing a countertop is such a big decision, it's good to have all the facts!
DeleteThey are so beautiful! My friends husband does this for a living. They have them in their home and they are lovely!
ReplyDeleteIt's a lovely counter top! I can't believe that it could be inexpensive. Have a beautiful day, Kellie xx
ReplyDeleteThanks so much :)
DeleteOk.. So glad you were honest about how hard this was... I have been wanting to try and make a concrete countertop for 5 years now! Honestly I'm just plain afraid to try it! I want to do a small one first, for the laundry room, maybe your post will help jump start my plans.. Your countertops look so great! - Susan
ReplyDeleteThanks! I think making a small one first is a great idea :) Hope I can help give you the info. you need!
DeleteI have been contemplating doing these but I was afraid we would bite off more than we could chew. I do love how they look, they are amazing!
ReplyDeleteMaybe, who knows.
Well, it's definately not a "starter" DIY project... but if you are handy and up for a challenge it might be a good one!
ReplyDeleteThe bench looks fantastic, does it feel smooth? I might have to ask a concreter to attempt this for me!
ReplyDeleteThanks! Yes, it's very smooth. We did have a professional finish the concrete, but we did everything else!
DeleteYou were very brave but I agree with you that it was really worth it! Your counter tops are beautiful and filled with character too. Thank you for sharing:)
ReplyDeleteless than laminate? wow..I had no idea! We designed out house 9 yrs ago and went with laminate too..b/c the kids were little and I didn't want to spend the $ then..this spring I am getting granite...I never even considered concrete until I saw your kitchen!
ReplyDeleteI am your newest follower...pls follow back if you can!
We were surprised too! Thanks so much for following along here at Salvage Savvy, I'll be sure to check out your blog as well!
DeleteI love the look of them! the man who did our countertops with laminate actually does the concrete ones for a living..he is a true artisan, but for as old as our house was with a giant u shaped kitchen counters it would have been astronomical to pay him. I think you did an amazing job and its incredible.
ReplyDeleteOver via MMS..

Hi Karin! Thanks so much :) You are exactly right- if you have concrete countertops made for you they actually cost about the same as granite because they are so labor intensive!
DeleteOhhh, this is a project I would love to try someday. I love the color you chose, so perfect! A few blog friends and I introduced a new challenge idea Monday and it would be so fun if you want to join. If you have a second, check in at http://thespacebetweenblog.wordpress.com/2012/01/09/imagine-the-impossibilities-challenge/ to learn more, and feel free to email me if you have any questions!

I really wanted these in our kitchen. I love the concrete countertops. But my brother was helping me redo the kitchen and he didn't think he could do it. Didn't know enough about and didn't want to mess it up. We have granite that was on sale~it is 3/4 in instead of 1 or 1 1/2 inch which is much more expensive.
ReplyDeleteI love the soapstone, too but it was out of our budget. Your counters look awesome.
Ruth
can't wait till you get the instructions up I have many questions. I've wanted to do this forever just can't get the courage up. Did you por them in place or in sections?
ReplyDeleteLinda
This is awesome! Dying for instructions!
ReplyDeleteThese are really beautiful! I've been thinking about concrete counters in our kitchen. We have granite right now, but far from being nice and high-end, they are U.G.L.Y., this horrible brown/red splotch pattern. Ugh. Yours are so nice, I think I might try talking my own superhero hubby into it! Thanks! (following! :)
ReplyDeleteHi Jamie, thank you! How sad that someone invested a good deal of cash into a not-so-great granite choice... Well, I'll get you as much info. as I can, just make sure to do LOTS of research before starting this project because it's a "doozy" haha! Welcome to Salvage Savvy, I'm so glad to have you as a new follower!
DeleteLove you countertops! I researched doing concrete in my kitchen for over a year before I put it on the back burner. Still want to do it - someday! You will have to explain how you got the color - it is beautiful! Did you use a special concrete mix for countertops or just plain concrete? I'm a new follower.
ReplyDeleteThanks Shannon! I'll explain in the post more,[which I'm working on now... should get it finished-up tomorrow] but I chose to apply a stain to the countertops rather than mix the color into the concrete. I wanted it to have depth, and pre-tinted concrete tends to look a little flat. And it was just regular-old concrete from Mendards!
DeleteWow! I L.O.V.E. your countertops!! I have big plans for updating my kitchen this year, so I am very interested in the how-to! I just found your blog from TT&J and am your newest follower! Have a great day!
ReplyDeleteHi Mariah! Thanks so much and welcome to Salvage Savvy!!
DeleteI've been considering this as a countertop option for myself too but frankly am afraid of the mess (dust) for the finishing of the tops. However, they ARE one of a kind and can be personalized so easily. They look great. I really like that cool pendant over the sink too!
ReplyDeleteLove the counter top!! You guys did an amazing job! We rent our house, so I won't be trying yours quite yet, but we have blue laminate counter tops (nuff-said!) So just this evening I decided to see how they would look painted with Annie Sloan Chalk paint in Graphite. Our landlord loves that I can fix up "her" house! Stopping by from MMS! New follower, would love for you to stop by! Here is a link to my cabinet makeover and you can see the counter tops there...

DeleteInteresting post. I've loved the look of concrete, but my husband is not so sure. Thanks for some of the pros and cons, especially. Gives me more to think about.
ReplyDeleteHi Kimberly! No problem, I love hearing the truth from real people who aren't selling anything, so I hope it helps :)
DeleteFound you from TT&J linky party. Just subscribed to you.
ReplyDeleteOk, girl. I have been wanting to do this for awhile, but I have been intimidated. Seriously waiting for your tutorial. I have LOTS of questions, but I will wait until after your post the tut. They look great!

I just want to say you have a very nice blog, with helpful links and information as well. Thanks for sharing.. I love these counter tops
ReplyDeleteI think your kitchen counter looks great. It's a good thing that you did not opt for plain countertop 'coz I think it is quite boring. I guess the granite suited your kitchen well.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh! I just did a post on concrete counter tops in my kitchen! I used them because I already had slate and wanted to match it. LOVE yours, would you consider linking it up with me at Wow Us Wednesday? Thanks!
